College Football Programs on the Hot Seat
#3 – Texas Tech Red Raiders
Tech goes here because of the “window of opportunity” philosophy. The time for Mike Leach’s boys to win is absolutely right now. It’s Graham Harrell’s senior year, and Michael Crabtree could be very tempted to go into the NFL draft after this season (he’s a red shirt sophomore, so he is eligible to go pro). Texas Tech is ranked in the preseason top 10 in most major polls, and if they want to get to a BCS bowl and make a statement to a nationwide audience, now is the time.
Best case scenario: Tech wins the Big XII, Harrell gets the Heisman, and the BCS computers are kind enough to put Texas Tech in the national championship game. All of this notoriety would lead to some big time recruiting classes to keep the momentum rolling.
Worst case: Tech loses to rivals Texas and OU, also falls in road games at Kansas and Texas A&M, Crabtree goes pro, and Tech goes to a mediocre bowl and continues to take a backseat to the bigger programs in the Big XII. Pressure’s on.
