Ark.-Little Rock Trojans vs Tulsa Golden Hurricane

Ark.-Little Rock Trojans vs Tulsa Golden Hurricane Game Summary
Game Preview
Preview: Arkansas-Litle Rock (0-1) at Tulsa (2-0)

GAME NOTES: An early call to the Reynolds Center this afternoon finds the Tulsa Golden Hurricane taking on non-conference foe Arkansas-Little Rock.

Tulsa, which is playing five straight home games to open the 2009-10 campaign and will be in front of the hometown crowd in nine of the first 10 contests overall, already has a pair of wins in the bank with triumphs over Saint Mary's (Texas) and Florida International.

Last season, the Golden Hurricane was an impressive 25-11 overall and captured 15 wins in 17 opportunities in this building, the lone setbacks coming against BYU and Memphis.

As for the Trojans, a team that operates in the Sun Belt Conference, they went from being tripped up by Harding in an exhibition contest (80-77) at home to being blown away in the official opener on Friday against Ole Miss on the road, 92-64.

UALR, which played a manageable non-conference schedule a year ago, finished with a record of 23-8 and was 11-3 on the road.

With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, this is the third game, with the first two having been split. The most recent encounter took place back in December of 2007 when the Trojans captured a 62-51 victory at home.

While Ole Miss was letting loose with 28 shots behind the three-point line on Friday evening, the Trojans refrained from taking too many chances beyond the arc (4-of-9) which is one of the reasons why the visitors were crushed at Tad Smith Coliseum. It also didn't help that UALR made only 18-of-31 chances at the free-throw line and was guilty of 22 turnovers either. Solomon Bozeman accounted for 12 points and four assists, followed by Wayne Burton with 11 points on 4-of-5 from the floor. Last year this team had a quartet of double- digit scorers to lean on, but the only one of them back for another turn is Matt Mouzy, a junior guard who accounted for 10.1 ppg as he made good on 73- of-191 behind the three-point line. Last year Bozeman had to watch from the sidelines due to his transfer from South Florida where he averaged 7.3 points and 2.5 assists in two seasons with the Bulls. Burton, a senior who is a transfer from Western Texas College, will be expected to shoulder more of the scoring load now that he is eligible.

Tulsa scored the first points of the game against the Golden Panthers on Sunday afternoon and never looked back, streaking to the 81-49 triumph without breaking much of a sweat. Converting all but one of his 14 free-throw chances, Ben Uzoh finished with 20 points to go along with his seven rebounds and four assists, followed by Justin Hurtt and Jerome Jordan with 16 and 12 points, respectively. Jordan missed just one of his seven field goal attempts and contributed with seen rebounds and a team-best six blocked shots for a team that crushed FIU on the glass, 54-31, and limited the visitors to just 3-of-25 behind the three-point line. Through the first two games, this team is outscoring opponents by almost 30 points and has held those foes to a mere 32.4 percent shooting from the field and a paltry 18.8 percent out on the perimeter. One of four scoring in double figures, Uzoh is good for 18 ppg and has almost as many made free-throws (13) as the first two opponents combined (18).

The Golden Hurricane won't be able to keep up this dominant play over non- conference opponents this season, but it could easily carry over versus the Trojans today.
