Buckeyes' "Beanie" headed for NFL

Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Ohio State running back Chris "Beanie" Wells announced Thursday he will forgo his senior season and enter his name into the 2009 NFL Draft.

Wells, who battled through a right foot injury suffered early in the 2008 season, rushed for 1,197 yards -- gaining 5.8 yards per carry -- to go along with eight touchdowns despite missing three games for the 10-3 Buckeyes.

"This has been a difficult decision, but in the best interest of my family, I have decided to enter my name into the 2009 National Football League draft," Wells said in a statement. "I want to thank my teammates, my coaches, my teachers and the academic advisors for all they have done, and I definitely want to thank the Buckeye fans for all their support. Ohio State has become like a family to me, and it will always be that way."

The 6-foot-1, 237-pound back compiled 3,382 rushing yards in his three seasons at Ohio State, ranking fourth on the school's all-time list.
