Terps tangle with Stags in College Park

College Park, MD (Sports Network) - The 25th-ranked Maryland Terrapins continue their three-game homestand tonight, as they host the Fairfield Stags in a non-conference clash at the Comcast Center.

The Terps opened their season this past Friday and they had very little trouble routing Charleston Southern, 89-51. It marked the 100th victory in the Comcast Center by Maryland, which recently moved into the Top 25. The Terps, who return a wealth of experience from last year's 21-win club, will cap off their current homestand against New Hampshire on Friday before heading off to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational.

As for the Stags, they have won their initial two games, giving the program its best start since the 2003-04 campaign. Fairfield got things started with a 67-58 besting of Central Connecticut State on Friday before downing Fordham, 63-55, on Sunday. This game is the first of four straight on the road for the Stags, who won't return home until they open conference play against Marist in early December.

Tonight's contest marks the first-ever meeting between Fairfield and Maryland on the hardwood.

The Stags used 28 points at the foul line and solid defense to overcome their dismal 29.4 percent shooting effort from the floor in a 63-55 win over Fordham this past weekend. Fairfield held Fordham to just a 30.0 percent performance from the field, while grabbing 47 rebounds. Shimeek Johnson and Anthony Johnson were big factors at each end of the court, as they both scored 13 points, while combining for 22 rebounds and six blocks. Derek Needham also got into the mix, as he led the team with 19 points, to go along with four assists and four steals. It was a complete effort by Needham, who had 14 points and six helpers in the club's opening win.

The Terps dropped in 50.7 percent of their shots from the floor and held- Charleston Southern to a dismal 30.0 percent effort, as they coasted to an 89-51 victory. Landon Milbourne led the charge with an all-around effort that consisted of 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals. It was a solid start for the senior forward, who averaged 11.4 ppg and 5.2 rpg a year ago. Sean Mosley added 15 points and five boards, and freshman Jordan Williams had 12 points and nine rebounds in his debut. Eric Hayes chipped in with 10 points and dished out five helpers for Maryland, which totaled 27 assists and 15 steals in the win. Greivis Vasquez, one of the top returning players around, shot just 3-of-14 from the floor for only nine points, but he did hand off a game-high 13 assists. The senior guard can both score and distribute at a high level and that was evident last season, when he led the Terps with 17.5 ppg and 5.0 apg.
