General News Lone Star State showdown pits Longhorns against Bears |
Waco, TX (Sports Network) - Two teams fighting for position in the Big 12 come together in Waco today, as the 21st-ranked Baylor Bears host the Texas Longhorns at the Ferrell Center.
The Bears enter the day in a three-way tie for third place in the Big 12, with the top four finishers earning a bye in the upcoming league tourney. Baylor has played well down the stretch, winning three straight and six of its past seven outings, to put itself in position for a bye. On Tuesday, the Bears handled Texas Tech, 86-68, for their school-record 10th Big 12 win. The triumph also pushed Baylor to 23-6 overall, marking the first time the program has been 17 games above .500 since a 24-7 showing in 1947-48.
Texas meanwhile, sits just one game back of the group for third place at 9-6, so the team is still alive for a first-round bye in the postseason as well. The once top-ranked Horns have had some struggles following a 17-0 start, but they have begun to get things straightened out with wins in three of their last four outings. On Monday, Texas posted an 87-76 victory over Oklahoma to run its overall mark to 23-7.
The Horns own a commanding 155-77 lead in the all-time series with Baylor and Texas is a perfect 11-0 against the Bears in Waco under head coach Rick Barnes. The Bears however, took the first meeting of this season, 80-77, in overtime and are gunning for their first regular-season sweep of the Horns since 1997-98.
Texas shot an efficient 53.6 percent from the floor and went 23-of-28 at the foul line, as it defeated Oklahoma earlier in the week. The Horns also had their way down low, dominating the boards, 38-21, and outscoring Oklahoma in the paint, 38-22. Damion James led the charge with 24 points and eight rebounds, while J'Covan Brown tacked on 15 points and five assists. One of the top players in the conference, James averages a double-double on the season with 17.7 ppg and 10.3 rpg. Avery Bradley is a distant second at 12.0 ppg and he can drain the three, shooting at a 39.6 percent clip. Dexter Pittman provides some more muscle down low, as he checks in with 10.5 ppg and 5.9 rpg.
Baylor connected on 52.6 percent of its field goals and 21-of-24 free throws, as it pulled way from Texas Tech on Tuesday. The Bears also controlled the boards, 39-23, including a 13-7 edge on the offensive glass. Tweety Carter scored 18 points and dished out nine assists to lead the way, while Ekpe Udoh had 17 points and six rebounds. LaceDarius Dunn had an off night with just nine points, but he is still the driving force behind this club, averaging a hardy 18.8 ppg on the campaign. Carter follows with 15.8 ppg and he has been in charge of running the offense, handing out a team-high 6.2 apg. Udoh is another weapon at 13.6 ppg and he is even better at the defensive end, ripping down a team-high 9.9 rpg and blocking 4.2 shots per game.
