Gonzaga puts perfect mark on line versus Indiana

Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - The fifth-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs will do battle with the Indiana Hoosiers at Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the NFL's Indianapolis Colts, as part of the Hartford Hall of Fame Showcase.

It can certainly be argued with great validity that this year's Gonzaga squad is the best that Mark Few has had during his tenure at the school. The Bulldogs have won their first five games, including three in a row to capture the championship of the Old Spice Classic. Unlike some other tournaments that feature some participants from non-major conferences, Gonzaga had to knock off Oklahoma State and Maryland to earn the right to face Tennessee for the title on Sunday. The Zags knocked off the highly-ranked Vols, 83-74, and figure to enter today's tilt with plenty of confidence.

Indiana is going through a rebuilding period under first-year head coach Tom Crean, and that was evident in Tuesday's 83-58 loss to Wake Forest as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Hoosiers own a respectable 4-3 record, but their wins have all come over weak non-conference opponents. They lost to Notre Dame by 38 points and to Saint Joseph's by 26, so Crean certainly has some work to do.

Indiana grabbed a 2-1 edge in the all-time series with Gonzaga thanks to a 70-57 triumph over the Zags last season.

There are six outstanding players on the Gonzaga roster, and the fact that West Coast Conference Preseason Player of the Year Jeremy Pargo is last among the group in scoring speaks to the team's overall talent. Josh Heytvelt leads the Bulldogs with 15.0 ppg, and fellow forward Austin Daye is providing 12.8 ppg and 7.4 rpg. Micah Downs adds 12.8 ppg to the mix, and Matt Bouldin chips in 11.4 ppg. As for Steven Gray, he rounds out the double-digit scorers with 10.6 ppg, while Pargo brings 9.6 ppg and seven assists to the floor. Gonzaga is generating 82.0 ppg while holding opponents to 60.4 ppg on 34.9 percent shooting. In the impressive victory over Tennessee, Gonzaga shot 51.9 percent from the field, including 11-of-20 from three-point range. Meanwhile, the Zags limited the Vols to 35.5 percent shooting, the most obvious reason that Gonzaga was able to overcome a staggering 50-26 rebounding disadvantage.

Indiana turned the ball over 26 times against Wake Forest on Tuesday and shot a disappointing 37.7 percent from the floor. The Hoosiers also missed 10 of their 22 foul shots and permitted the Demon Deacons to connect on 61.5 percent of their field goal attempts. Tom Pritchard, who has been a productive player for Indiana in many games this season, managed only four points against Wake on 1-of-7 shooting. Matt Roth led the Hoosiers with 12 points on 4-of-5 accuracy from three-point range in defeat, and Malik Story pitched in 10 points. Through seven outings, Pritchard is netting 14.1 ppg on 59 percent shooting from the floor, and he is pulling down 7.6 rpg. Devan Dumes adds 11.7 ppg, but his 38.6 percent shooting could certainly stand some improvement. Indiana is averaging 65.4 ppg while allowing 72.7 ppg to the opposition.
