General News Miners set sights on C-USA crown |
Huntington, WV (Sports Network) - With a chance to claim the outright title in the Conference-USA on the line, the 24th-ranked Texas-El Paso Miners will tangle with the Marshall Thundering Herd at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Miners currently sit at 13-1 in conference action and with a victory tonight the team will claim the regular-season championship. UTEP rolls into this matchup with a 12-game winning streak and that includes a 78-64 decision over Rice in its last contest.
The Herd are also riding a win streak, grabbing seven straight victories. The most recent win for Marshall was a thrilling 121-115 triple overtime win over UCF, which propelled the Herd to 10-4 in league play.
The Miners have won four of the five all-time meetings against Marshall, and two of those wins have come at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Miners have been dangerous at the offensive end of the floor and come into this game averaging 76.6 ppg, behind a solid 47.8 percent shooting effort. Randy Culpepper is pacing the team with 18.0 ppg on the year, while Derrick Caracter is posting 14.1 ppg, to go along with a team-high 8.8 rpg. Jeremy Williams is contributing 10.7 ppg, while Arnett Moultrie is netting 10.4 ppg, to go along with 6.9 rpg. The last time Texas-El Paso was on the floor the team overcame 21 turnovers by shooting 55.8 percent from the floor, and netting 12-of-25 attempts from behind the arc. Williams led the way in the win with 20 points, while Culpepper added 18 points. As for Caracter, he finished with nine points and nine boards.
The Thundering Herd needed three overtimes in their last matchup, but they eventually earned a victory over UCF by a 121-115 margin. Marshall shot a sizzling 59.6 percent from the field, connected on 10-of-21 attempts from behind the arc, and 43-of-67 shots from the foul line. Chris Lutz led the way with 25 points, while Dago Pena contributed 20 points. Damier Pitts added 19 points, while Hassan Whiteside posted an impressive triple-double of 14 points, 13 blocks and 11 rebounds. Marshall is currently one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the conference, as the squad is producing 80.8 ppg. Tyler Wilkerson is pacing the team with 13.4 ppg, while Whiteside is posting 13.2 ppg, to go along with 159 blocks and 9.0 rpg.
