General News No. 12 Clemson puts perfect mark on line against Alabama |
Clemson, SC (Sports Network) - The 12th-ranked and still undefeated Clemson Tigers will host the surging Alabama Crimson Tide tonight in a non-conference tilt.
Alabama has won its last five games to move to 10-3 overall, and the most recent triumph occurred on Saturday by an 88-77 final over Georgia Tech. This contest marks the final non-league clash of the season for the Crimson Tide, who will begin what promises to be a challenging SEC slate on Sunday against LSU. Alabama has yet to play a single true road game this season, surprising considering that we are already into January.
As for Clemson, it is a tremendously impressive 14-0 thus far, and while most of the victories have come over rather weak non-conference opponents, there have been a couple of quality wins along the way. The Tigers opened ACC play with a 91-72 romp over a solid Miami-Florida squad on December 21st. Since then, the club has played two non-league foes, beating South Carolina and East Carolina by double figures. The most recent of those two games was a 79-66 decision over ECU at home on Saturday.
Clemson holds a 4-3 edge in the all-time series with Alabama, including an 87-61 romp over the Crimson Tide last season.
The most obvious key to Alabama's success so far this season has been its play at the defensive end of the floor. The Crimson Tide are limiting opponents to 63.8 ppg on 38.1 percent shooting from the field, including 27.6 percent from three-point range. Offensively, the club is posting 74.1 ppg. Alonzo Gee paces 'Bama in scoring with his 14.7 ppg, and he is pulling down 7.3 rpg as well. Ronald Steele and Senario Hillman are both contributing 13.7 ppg, and Steele leads the squad with 3.8 apg. In the victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday, all five starters for the Crimson Tide reached double figures in scoring, and the team connected on 52.6 percent of its field goal attempts. Steele scored 23 points and dished out 10 assists while knocking down 5-of-8 three-pointers, clearly his best game of the season. As for Gee, he posted 15 points and 18 rebounds.
Clemson is scoring a robust 82.7 ppg on 49.9 percent shooting from the floor, and the club is limiting opponents to 63.5 ppg. K.C. Rivers is averaging 15.3 ppg to pace the Tigers, and Trevor Booker checks in with 14.6 ppg and 9.6 rpg. Booker has also blocked 35 shots and is a force on the low block for sure. As for Terrence Oglesby, he adds 13.6 ppg on 41.7 percent shooting from three- point range. In Saturday's win over East Carolina, Clemson overcame a 9-of-31 effort from three-point range. The Tigers can take great pride in the fact that they only committed six turnovers in that clash, and a 17-10 offensive rebounding advantage also helped the cause. Rivers came through with 18 points, and Booker posted 13 points and nine boards. As for Oglesby, he provided 10 points. Jerai Grant played extremely well in 18 minutes of action off the bench, as he hit all four of his field goal attempts and 6-of-7 from the foul line.
