General News Top-25 foes clash in Big East tussle in Morgantown |
Morgantown, WV (Sports Network) - The fifth-ranked Connecticut Huskies get a three-game road trip started tonight, as they invade Morgantown to take on the 25th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers in a Big East showdown.
The Huskies opened their Big East slate a week ago, only to suffer a 74-63 loss to Georgetown in their own backyard. It was certainly a bad start, but like any good team, UConn rebounded in a big way, trouncing Rutgers, 80-49, on Saturday. Now at 12-1 overall, the Huskies head away from home, where they have gone a perfect 5-0 between neutral site and road affairs.
As for WVU, it moved into the Top 25 for the first time this season following a 92-66 romp of Seton Hall on Saturday in its Big East opener. It was the fifth win in a row for the Mountaineers, who stepped up to 11-2 on the season. The team now heads back to WVU Coliseum, where it has gone 21-4 versus league foes over the last three years.
Dating back to the 1962-63 season, WVU and UConn have met 16 times, with the Huskies coming out on top in 12 of those encounters. The Mountaineers though, won the last clash, capturing a 78-72 victory in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Big East Tournament.
The Huskies have had success at both ends of the court this season and that is evident in the fact they are outscoring their opponents by 19.4 ppg. Jerome Dyson has been a factor at each side of the floor and he leads UConn in scoring (14.5 ppg) and steals (24), to go with 4.4 rpg and 3.6 apg. Jeff Adrien turns in 14.4 ppg and 9.0 rpg, and he has formed an unmatched one-two punch in the low post with Hasheem Thabeet, who averages a double-double with 14.0 ppg and a team-high 10.5 rpg. The duo are the primary reason the Huskies are outrebounding their opponents by a solid 8.9 rpg on the season. Kemba Walker has given the team a boost off the bench with 10.0 ppg, while A.J. Price checks in with 9.9 ppg and a team-best 4.7 apg. On Saturday, Thabeet logged 15 points and eight boards to pace UConn in a rout of Rutgers. Dyson contributed 14 points and four assists, and Adrien finished with 13 points and seven boards. UConn shot an efficient 51.9 percent from the floor and held a 37-29 edge on the boards in the win.
Much like UConn, the Mountaineers have made an impact at both ends of the floor and they are actually outscoring foes by a slightly higher 19.8 ppg. Alex Ruoff, a 40.7 percent shooter from long range, leads WVU in scoring with 17.1 ppg and he is also a solid defender, posting a team-best 24 steals. Da'Sean Butler ranks second in scoring (15.8 ppg) as well as rebounding (6.4 rpg), while Darryl Bryant chips in with 11.2 ppg. On Saturday, Butler and Ruoff both turned in 18 points, as the Mountaineers easily handled Seton Hall on the road. WVU put forth a great all-around shooting performance, hitting on 53.3 percent from the floor, 8-of-18 from downtown and 20-of-25 at the foul line. The team also won the battle on the boards, 39-28, but that came as no surprise considering WVU is outrebounding its opponents by 10.1 rpg on the season.
