General News No. 5 Blue Devils host Golden Hurricane in non-league bout |
Durham, NC (Sports Network) - The fifth-ranked Duke Blue Devils take a break from conference action and put a lengthy win streak on the line this evening, as they welcome the Tulsa Golden Hurricane to Durham for an intriguing matchup at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Mike Krzyzewski's Blue Devils have won 76 consecutive non-conference home games dating back to February of 2000. This year's squad has its sights set on the ACC title and is moving closer and closer to that with each victory. Duke enters this contest with a six-game win streak in tow, including a 67-55 victory over Virginia Tech this past weekend. The win gives the Blue Devils a one game lead over Maryland in the ACC standings, with just three league games remaining.
Tulsa head coach Doug Wojcik has been stuck on 100 wins for a little bit, as his Golden Hurricane helped him reach that mark with a 60-52 win over Southern Miss back on February 10th. The team however, has dropped three straight games since, including last Saturday's 78-70 home setback to UTEP, dropping Tulsa to 8-5 in Conference USA play.
This is just the third all-time meeting between these two teams, with Duke taking both prior matchups.
The Golden Hurricane rely on a strong defensive presence game-in and game-out. The team has succeeded in that area for the most part, allowing just 64.3 ppg this year, while holding foes under 40 percent from the floor (.395) and outrebounding them by 7.7 rebounds per game. The team possesses balance both inside and out with guards Ben Uzoh (16.1 ppg, 4.4 apg) and Justin Hurtt (13.8 ppg) delivering from the perimeter and center Jerome Jordan (15.2 ppg, 8.6 rpg) dominating in the paint. Jordan has 71 blocks on the season and is the C- USA's all-time leader in that category. In the team's recent loss to UTEP, Uzoh hit 7-of-14 shots from the floor to finish with 22 points. However, the team shot just .377 from the field. Jordan recorded yet another double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Hurtt chipped in with 15, but the rest of the roster combined for a mere 14 points in the loss.
Kyle Singler erupted for a double-double consisting of a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds, leading the Blue Devils to a crucial win over the Hokies this past weekend. Nolan Smith poured in 23 points in support, while Jon Scheyer finished with 15 points and seven assists. Duke was fortunate to escape with a victory, as the team shot a miserable 29 percent from the floor. The Blue Devils have been much more consistent at the offensive end of the floor this season, averaging 80.0 ppg, on .447 shooting. The team has also shown a penchant for strong defensive play, holding opponents to just 62.5 ppg and outrebounding them by more than six caroms per game. A trio of potent scorers fuel the Duke attack, led by Scheyer, who ranks second in the ACC in scoring (18.9 ppg) and fourth in assists (5.4 apg). Smith completes this dynamic backcourt with 17.9 ppg. Singler is the top player in the frontcourt, netting 16.9 ppg, while pacing the team in rebounding (7.3 rpg).
