BYU hoops coach Dave Rose gets new contract

Provo, UT (Sports Network) - Brigham Young University men's head basketball coach Dave Rose agreed to a new five-year contract Friday that will keep him in Provo through the 2013-14 season.

The agreement supplants Rose and the university's previous pact, signed in 2007 to retain his services through next season.

"Dave Rose has established a basketball program at BYU that stands for excellence," BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe stated in announcing the deal. "He is a leader that produces talented players on the court, scholars in the classroom and fine examples in the community. His teams are champions in every way and we are thrilled to have such a good man, true friend and superior teacher at the helm of BYU Basketball for years to come."

It's been a rough year for Rose, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in June. The 51-year-old originally underwent emergency surgery to stop internal bleeding and subsequent lab results revealed positive tests for pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor cancer. Rose then had his spleen and a portion of his pancreas removed in a second emergency procedure.

The rest of the BYU coaching staff took over day-to-day basketball operations while Rose received treatment. Since the tumor was removed, all scans have come back clear.

Since taking over for Steve Cleveland following the 2004-05 season, Rose was named Mountain West Coach of the Year in each of his first two seasons and led BYU to 20-win seasons and a postseason appearance in each of his four seasons at the helm.

The Cougars won outright MWC championships in 2007 and 2008 and earned a share of the regular season title this past season. Over that stretch Rose has guided the Cougars to three straight NCAA Tournament bids with 25-9, 27-8 and 25-8 seasons, respectively.

Prior to coming to BYU, Rose was the head coach at Dixie State College in St. George, Utah.

Izzo ties Heathcote as Spartans rout Valpo

Tom Izzo picked up his 340th career victory with Michigan State.
Chris Allen scored 22 points and Kalin Lucas added 15, as second-ranked Michigan State gave head coach Tom Izzo a record-tying victory in a 90-60 rout of Valparaiso at the Breslin Center.

Izzo picked up his 340th career victory with Michigan State to tie Jud Heathcote as the winningest coach in school history. Izzo owns a record of 340-137 with the Spartans.

'I swear that to you I didn't know the exact number and somebody brought it to my attention this morning,' said Izzo. 'You know, records are made to be broken and this one is only tied, but I guess it means a lot to me because I proved to withstand some time challenges, but I think it will make Jud feel good in the fact that his hand picked successor is the one to at least tie his record.' ...
