General News Kentucky seeks return to win column on road against Georgia |
Athens, GA (Sports Network) - The third-ranked Kentucky Wildcats are coming off just their second loss of the season, and they are undoubtedly eager to get back to action tonight against the Georgia Bulldogs in SEC action.
Kentucky carried an eight-game win streak into Saturday's road battle with Tennessee, but the result of that affair was a 74-65 setback. The Wildcats are 27-2 overall, and their 12-2 mark in SEC action is the best in the 12-team league. It is the opinion of many analysts that Kentucky has done enough to earn a top seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, and we will find out for sure on Sunday, March 14th. The Wildcats can clinch a share of their 44th SEC title with a win tonight, but a loss would allow Vanderbilt to pull even for first place atop the SEC Eastern Division standings.
As for Georgia, it has won two of its last three games to move to 13-14 overall and 5-9 in conference. On Saturday, the Bulldogs showed a great deal of toughness in a 78-76 triumph over Florida, and they are now 12-3 in front of the home crowd.
Kentucky knocked off Georgia by a 76-68 final back on January 9th, and the Wildcats own a commanding 111-22 advantage in the all-time series.
Against Tennessee, Kentucky shot a poor 35 percent from the floor, including a horrendous 2-of-22 effort from three-point range. Sure, the club did earn advantages in points from the foul line and rebounding, but the poor field goal percentage could not be overcome. John Wall scored 19 points and handed out six assists in defeat, and DeMarcus Cousins added 15 points and 14 rebounds. As for Patrick Patterson, he contributed 10 points for the Wildcats, who are scoring 79.9 ppg while holding opponents to 65.5 ppg on 38.1 percent shooting from the floor. Kentucky is outrebounding foes by nearly 10 boards per tilt, key to the success. Wall is scoring 16.8 ppg to go along with 173 assists and 51 steals, while Cousins, a fellow freshman phenom, adds 16.2 ppg and 10.3 rpg. Patterson provides 14.9 ppg to round out one of college basketball's elite trios.
The best player on the Georgia roster is Trey Thompkins, an underrated forward who is netting 17.9 ppg on 50.4 percent shooting while also pulling down 8.1 rpg. There is only one other double-digit scorer in the fold, as Travis Leslie checks in with 14.4 ppg and 6.8 rpg. The Bulldogs are registering 69.2 ppg while permitting an almost identical 69.6 ppg to opponents. Thompkins scored 20 points to go with five assists against Florida on Saturday, and Leslie posted 12 points. The Bulldogs shot an impressive 57.4 percent from the floor, including 7-of-13 from three-point range, and they also earned a 33-26 rebounding advantage. A total of 40 points in the paint and 21 assists clearly helped the cause.
