General News 24th-ranked Huskies take on Wildcats in desert |
Tucson, AZ (Sports Network) - The 24th-ranked Washington Huskies will try to snap out of their first slide of the season, as they invade the McKale Center this evening to tangle with the Arizona Wildcats in Pac-10 play.
The Huskies are off to just a 1-2 start to Pac-10 action, as they have dropped their last two outings. After suffering a surprising 90-79 home loss to Oregon, Washington was handled, 68-51, at Arizona State on Friday. Now at 10-4 overall, the Huskies will take another crack at notching their first road win in their fourth game away from home.
As for Arizona, it too was in play on Friday, when it suffered a heart- breaking 78-76 loss to Washington State. It was the third defeat in the past four games for the Wildcats, who fell under .500 at 7-8. Arizona is now just 1-2 within the conference and it hasn't been all that great at home either, boasting a modest 5-3 mark at the McKale Center.
Arizona leads the head-to-head series with Washington, 42-24, after the two teams split a pair of meetings a season ago.
The Huskies shot a lackluster 36.0 percent from the floor, including a poor 3- of-14 showing from long range, as they were held to a season-low 51 points in a loss at Arizona State on Friday. Washington also struggled at the foul line, going just 12-of-21, and it even lost the battle on the boards, 39-29. Isaiah Thomas paced the team in defeat with 20 points and five boards, while Quincy Pondexter turned in nine points and eight rebounds. For the season, Pondexter is averaging a much higher 20.4 ppg and he also leads the team with 8.3 rpg. Thomas has provided a nice complement to him and checks in with 18.3 ppg and 4.1 rpg. The tandem make up nearly half of the team's scoring average of 80.3 ppg.
DeAngelo Casto converted a layup with 0.1 seconds remaining, lifting Washington State to a 78-76 win over Arizona on Friday. It was certainly a disappointing finish for the Wildcats, who shot 46.4 percent from the field and 17-of-24 at the foul line. Nic Wise guided the squad in the loss with 15 points and four helpers, while Derrick Williams and Kyle Fogg each posted 13 points. For the season, Wise leads Arizona in scoring at 15.1 ppg and he is also distributing a team-high 4.0 apg. Williams ranks second with both 14.9 ppg and 6.7 rpg, while Jamelle Horne contributes 11.4 ppg and a team-high 7.1 rpg.
