Stanford hits road to tangle with No. 23 Texas Tech

Lubbock, TX (Sports Network) - The Stanford Cardinal of the Pac-10 Conference are slated to take on the 23rd-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders of the Big 12 at United Spirit Arena in Lubbock tonight.

Stanford has suffered back-to-back losses to fall to 5-5 overall, a disappointing start for coach Johnny Dawkins. On Saturday, the club fell to Northwestern in a 70-62 final, and the Cardinal carry an 0-2 record in true road games into this evening's affair. Pac-10 action has yet to begin for Stanford, which may be able to make some noise in the wide open league this year.

Texas Tech opened the 2009-10 season with nine consecutive wins, but the team finally tasted defeat at Wichita State on Saturday, 85-83. Still, the Red Raiders have reason for confidence tonight, as they are a perfect 7-0 at home. Big 12 Conference play doesn't begin until January 9th, and all four remaining non-conference games until then are certainly winnable.

The Cardinal have won all three previous meetings with the Red Raiders. Last season, Stanford crushed Texas Tech in a 111-66 final.

Landry Fields is clearly the best player for Stanford, as he has led the club in scoring in nine of the 10 outings. Fields is racking up 23.0 ppg on 50 percent shooting from the floor, and he is also tops with 8.8 rpg and 23 steals. Jeremy Green provides 15.5 ppg as the club's only other double-digit scorer, and he is a 43.2 percent shooter from three-point range. The Cardinal is posting 73.6 ppg while holding foes to 68.1 ppg. Fields scored 24 points in the eight-point loss to Northwestern last time out, and he also pulled down nine rebounds to go along with five assists. Green posted 14 points, but his 5-of-17 effort from the field was far from impressive. Stanford turned the ball over 18 times, 10 more than Northwestern, and a 22-6 deficit in points from the foul line also hurt the cause.

Texas Tech got 24 points from John Roberson against Wichita State on Saturday, and he also dished out five assists before fouling out. Nick Okorie posted 16 points, Mike Singletary netted 13 and David Tairu finished with 11. Unfortunately, Singletary committed nine turnovers, and 17 total giveaways by the team certainly hurt the cause. A 28-18 deficit in points from the foul line also contributed to the setback. Through 10 games this season, Roberson is averaging 14.6 ppg to go along with 5.6 apg. Singletary adds 14.1 ppg, but he has 37 turnovers with only 22 assists. As for Tairu, he checks in with 11.1 ppg. The Red Raiders are generating 78.8 ppg while allowing 65.8 ppg.
