General News Coles agrees to extension with RedHawks |
Oxford, OH (Sports Network) - Miami of Ohio has agreed to a three-year contract extension with men's basketball coach Charlie Coles.
Coles has guided the RedHawks for 13 seasons and owns the most wins of any coach in program history with a record of 224-168. In 19 seasons as a head coach in the Mid-American Conference, including six years as the head coach at Central Michigan, Coles has compiled an overall career mark of 316-252 and a career conference record of 193-132. His 193 MAC wins rank second to former Toledo head coach Bob Nichols' 194 league triumphs.
"I just love coaching basketball. It's been my whole life," said Coles. "I thought I could walk away after this year, but I found out that I just couldn't. I love doing what I'm doing, so to be able to continue coaching is a dream come true."
Coles, a 1965 Miami graduate, just completed a three-year extension he signed in July 2006. The RedHawks finished 17-13 this past season and lost in the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament to eventual champion Akron.
"We are very excited to have Charlie continue to lead our program," said Miami athletic director Brad Bates.
During Coles' tenure, the RedHawks have advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times, the last coming in 2007, with a pair of NIT bids.
