General News Owls hope to keep pace in A-10 title race |
St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - With the Atlantic 10 Conference title still very much up for grabs, the 20th-ranked Temple Owls face a must-win game tonight against the Saint Louis Billikens.
Temple enters this final week of the regular season tied with Xavier atop the league standings, as both teams own 12-2 mark. Considering the fact that the Musketeers are facing a Fordham team tonight that is winless in A-10 play, the Owls are clearly under more pressure to keep pace. Temple is currently riding a five-game win streak and is 24-5 overall, with 11 wins coming in true road games.
As for Saint Louis, it is far from a pushover, as the club is 19-9 overall, including 10-4 in league play and 15-2 at home. The Billikens have won seven of their last eight outings, including a 69-59 decision over Duquesne on Saturday.
The Owls own a 3-1 series advantage over the Billikens, which includes a 65-40 romp over Saint Louis in last season's meeting.
While Temple lacks a true star, there are three double-digit scorers in the fold and an emerging young standout in Ramone Moore (7.7 ppg). Ryan Brooks leads the Owls with 14.6 ppg, and Juan Fernandez checks in with 12.3 ppg and 99 assists. As for Lavoy Allen, he provides 11.5 ppg to go along with team highs of 10.9 rpg and 44 blocks. Allen's team is generating 65.5 ppg while surrendering 57.0 ppg to opponents on 37.9 percent shooting from the floor. Clearly, strong defense has been key to success, and solid rebounding has helped as well. Fernandez poured in 23 points in a 65-53 victory over La Salle on Sunday. Allen pulled down 21 rebounds and scored 17 points, while Micheal Eric tallied 10 points. Temple shot only 38.3 percent from the field but earned a 50-27 rebounding advantage and an 8-1 edge in points from the foul line.
Kwamain Mitchell is the leading scorer for Saint Louis this season, as he is netting 16.3 ppg. Cody Ellis checks in with 12.0 ppg, and Willie Reed provides 11.9 ppg and 8.2 rpg. The Billikens are generating a modest 64.0 ppg, but they excel at the defensive end of the floor, limiting foes to 59.6 ppg on 39.5 percent shooting from the field, including 26.7 percent from three-point range. Mitchell scored 23 points against Duquesne on Saturday, while Ellis, Reed and Brian Conklin added 10 points apiece. Saint Louis earned a 34-25 rebounding advantage and an 18-6 edge in points from the foul line.
