Week 2 recruiting roundup

After Saturday's win over Georgia and a top 5 ranking, things couldn't be much better in Stillwater but what about the future? Here's a look at how the Cowboys incoming class fared last week.

Sand Springs quarterback Johnny Deaton
May as well start with the bad news, as you probably have heard by now, Deaton will miss the next six to eight weeks after breaking his collarbone in the third quarter in their loss to Enid.

Player Grade: Incomplete
Thoughts: Obviously it's a tough break and will certainly set back his development. Whether or not he'll get to see any action before the season is over will depend on how quickly he heals and whether or not his team can make the playoffs without him.

Cypress Ridge, (Houston) receiver Kevin Johnson
For the second consecutive week, Johnson made the most of his limited opportunities, catching 3 passes for 89 yards. Though his team lost 38-30 to the Rams, his 58 yard touchdown catch was one of the top plays of the game.

Player Grade: B+
Thoughts: No question he's one of the speedier players in the Houston area and has good hands. Down-field blocking could use some improvement.

Booker T. Washington Defensive Tackle Calvin Barnett
One of the Cowboys' latest commits was on hand for last week's win over Georgia and was impressed with what he saw. "It was nice to see the campus on a gameday and everyone was very cordial, I can't wait to get here". Neither can the coaching staff as he showed well in his team's season opening 27-6 win over Albert.

He was dominant and virtually immovable in the middle of the defensive line.

Player Grade: A-
Comments:
You can never have enough big bodies in the defensive line and at 6-foot-3 and 300 pounds, Barnett is certainly that. One area that could use a little improvement is conditioning but other than that, he looks ready to contribute at the next level.

Celina linebacker Caleb Lavey
After a good opening game, Lavey and his teammates had a bad loss (27-24) to Trinity Christian-Addison. Lavey still led the team in tackles but had a much harder time shedding blockers as the defense surrendered 335 yards rushing.

Player Grade: C+
Comments:
Lavey is an impressive specimen physically but he struggled a little bit with the step up in competition (TCA is a large private school).

Rowlett Safety Deion Imade
Struggled in a 31-28 loss to Rockwall. Rockwall quarterback Adam Dingwell is committed to San Diego State and did a good job of keeping the Rowlett defense off-balance all night long as evidenced by the fact that the Yellowjackets rolled up 400 yards of total offense.

Player grade: C-
Comments:
Did nothing to distinguish himself in this game as being any different from the other players on the field.

The following players had the week off and will be back in action this weekend.

Arlington Bowie Receiver Montra Nelson
Arlington Bowie Def. Tackle Diamonte Wheeler
Ft. Bend Hightower Linebacker Shaun Lewis
San Antonio Madison Linebacker Kris Catlin
San Antonio Madison Linebacker/Safety Tommy Saunders
