Week 5 Recruiting Roundup - Oklahoma State
While the Cowboys' enjoyed a week off, so too did many of their 2010 recruits. Here's a look at where they are at the midway point of the season.
John Tyler Offensive Lineman Gerron Anthony
Anthony and his teammates enjoyed a bye week after going 5-0 to start the season. The Lions are averaging 46 points a game and Anthony has played at a high level in the first half of the season. They start district play this week on the road against 5-0 Mesquite Horn.
Arp Tailback Lavocheya Cooper
Also out of action last week as his team had a bye. Ran for 64 yards on just 7 carries and scored two touchdowns in a 54-7 victory over Tatum two weeks ago. At the midway point of the season, Cooper's numbers are impressive - 53 carries for 473 yards (8.9 per carry) and nine touchdowns. The Tigers' will be back in action this week against Garrison.
Huntsville Athlete Justin Gilbert
Lost to Brenham 30-14 but was the star of the game in a losing effort. He caught 2 passes for 60 yards and returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Every week it seems Gilbert electrifies the crowd with at least one big play. He's as good as anyone in Texas in the open field. The Hornets will try to get back on the winning track this week against Waller.
San Antonio Madison Linebacker Kris Catlin
Catlin and the rest of the Mavericks were off last weekend with a bye. At the halfway point of the season they are 3-1. The defense has been good (yielding just 14 points a game) but still has a lot of room for improvement. The Mavericks resume district play this Friday against perennial powerhouse Smithson Valley.
San Antonio Madison Safety Tommy Saunders
By his own admission, Saunders hasn't had as good a first half of the season as he would like. "Teams really haven't been throwing my way so that's been disappointing but eventually they'll have to. When they do, I'll be ready" he said. Thus far the stats reflect that statement as he has just 23 tackles and one interception.
Celina Linebacker Caleb Lavey
The Bobcats are 3-2 at the halfway point of the season and like most of the other teams, they were not in action due to a scheduled bye-week. Lavey has been very consistent thus far, leading Celina in tackles and displaying senior leadership. Celina will start district play this week against Sanger.
Galena Park North Shore Defensive Back Larry Stephens
Staying with the off-week theme here, you guessed it, Stephens and his Mustang teammates got some extra practice in during their bye week. They enter district play with a 4-1 record and coming off an impressive 28-15 win over Southlake Carroll, appear poised to make a run at a state title. The last time that happened, the Mustangs were led by former OSU quarterback Bobby Reid.
Booker T. Washington Defensive Tackle Calvin Barnett
The Hornets broke a two-game losing streak in a big way - with a 90-0 win over a winless Miami (Ok) team. Barnett has been a fixture in opponents backfields all season long. At 6-foot-5 and 300 pounds, he has seen more than his fair share of double-teams and has had to battle through some injuries. Barnett and his teammates will take on Pryor in a 3-5A district showdown this weekend.
Ft. Bend Hightower Linebacker Shaun Lewis
The Hurricanes continued their dominance of Houston area teams with a 28-7 victory over Ft. Bend Travis. Hightower is now ranked 4th in the state of Texas, thanks in large part to the play of the defense and in particular Lewis. For the season, they are allowing just 6.5 points per game. Hightower will be looking to improve their record to 6-0 this weekend against Sugarland Dulles.
Houston Bellaire Defensive End Joseph Okafor
Was stellar on defense in a 69-0 shutout of Austin High. Many of the starters were pulled early in this one but while he was in, Okafor was dominant as you would expect in a route like this. The Cardinal defense yielded just 54 yards on the ground and 29 through the air. They'll get a much stiffer test this week against Madison who comes in at 4-1 on the season.
