Bowie defends hometurf, wins SQT
ARLINGTON--
The Colonels surprised many by getting to the finals behind stellar play from senior quarterback Colton Altier. Altier was on the money throughout the day and got a lot of help from John Lacour. Lacour returns as the team's leading receiver from a year ago and picked up right where he left off last season with several highlight reel catches.
But in the end, Bowie came up with just enough stops to hold on for a hard-fought victory. Things got a little chippy at the end as junior Quintin Sargent was ejected after some extracurricular activity with a South Garland receiver, however he and Troy George-Adams were standouts on defense throughout the day.
The Colonels had the benefit of sitting out a game through a pre-determined bye but the extra rest wasn't enough as Bowie overcame a 14-13 halftime deficit with Langston Williams giving the Volunteers an unexpected boost with several clutch catches. Bowie, South Garland and Coppell each qualified for the State Tournament in College Station on July 10th.
Sideline Notes
*Although they fell one game short of the championship, Coppell was very impressive as quarterback Hayden Hawk was on target all day long. Jeff Johnson, Cam McDaniel and Taylor Gobel all showed well, running crisp routes and displaying sure hands.
*Arlington High School didn't win their pool but with several starters missing, they should be a force from here out. Quarterback Matt Joeckel had a good day but would love to have one pass back. A pick six can be deadly in 7-on-7 and a miscommunication with a receiver proved to be too much to recover from as they fell to Hebron 43-18.
*In just their second year of varsity play the kids from Dallas Conrad showed a lot of heart going 1-2 in pool play, including an impressive 25-7 win over A. Maceo Smith.
*Arlington Junior Miles Onyegbule was the most impressive athlete on the field. At 6 foot 4 and 200 pounds, Onyegbule looks like a young Plaxico Burress.
*The biggest surprise was arguably the play of Boswell quarterback Quinton Gregory. After playing in just 2 games last season, he showed excellent mechanics and made good reads in leading Boswell to a 3-1 record.
