Season Preview - District 25-4A

Winning records in 2007: 3

Playoff teams in 2007: 1

District playoff record: 6-0 (Lake Travis - Division II state champions)

And the winner is: Lake Travis

Lake Travis is so loaded on offense it's scary. The Cavaliers return just six starters, but kept their offensive core intact with two receivers, two lineman and their starting running back and quarterback all back in tow.

Quarterback Garrett Gilbert, a Texas commit, is the main offensive star after his record-breaking junior campaign, but every skill player on the Cavaliers' roster is dangerous. Look for running back Chris Aydam to give Gilbert an even bigger target out of the backfield this season.

And while the offense is stacked, the defense was key in the post-season and also brings back five starters to build off that momentum. Top to bottom, few can match Lake Travis' firepower here, so look for the Cavs to roll into the post-season looking for a test.

Don't bet against: Marble Falls

A pair of late-season blowouts cost Marble Falls a playoff spot and there are enough players back to let that memory still sting. Each side of the ball returns three starters, but none is bigger than quarterback Thor Warner.

Warner accounted for roughly 2,000 yards of total offense  and more than 20 touchdowns last season and can single-handedly take over a game with his arm or legs. How well equipped he to do that hinges on a rebuilt offensive line and a defense that can get the ball in his hands.

Safety Ryan Henson should develop into an excellent playmaker and a defensive leader. If the defense is as good as last season, Warner will have enough chances to lead the Mustangs into the postseason.

Show me something: Hutto

Few teams in the area can rival the support and passion Hutto's players and fans bring to the table every Friday night. Now the Hippos just have to feed off that energy a little bit more.

Hutto, a regional power in Class 3A, will have to adjust to playing against bigger and faster foes if its to continue its success. Six starters on both sides of the ball return, none bigger than the starting backfield duo of Jacob Dominguez and running back Devin Carver.

Carver and Dominguez both missed half the season due to injuries last season and should help Hippos ground attack thrive. Now, all Hutto has to do is stop the run (opponents averaged more than 300 yards last season) and the Hippos could be a 4A force.

At the finish line it's:

Lake Travis

Marble Falls

Killeen

Hutto

Hendrickson

Dripping Springs

Lampasas
