Judson shuts down Warren 23-12

Coming off the 11th state final appearance in school history, Judson opened 2008 with a convincing win over Warren 23-12 Thursday at Gustafson Stadium in a meeting of the two teams that are built on defense.

The Rockets (1-0) welcomed back head coach Jim Rackley (after undergoing quintuple bypass heart surgery this spring ) with the kind of strong defensive play that Judson is known for.

Tailback Chauncey Harris turned in a workman like game career-high 206 yards but the play of the game came from backup Gabriel Hilliard who ripped off a 44-yard touchdown on third-and-29 that put the game on ice. The defense was as advertised, forcing four turnovers and limiting Warren (0-1) to just 75 total yards in the second half.

As dominant as the defense was, the offense struggled in the redzone, netting just 13 points on four trips inside the Warren 20 yard line. They wasted another scoring opportunity, set up by a Travis Phelps fumble recovery at the Warriors 36, with a quick three-and-out.

The Warriors only impressive drive in the second quarter with a well executed nine-play, 80-yard touchdown drive but that would be about the only bright spot against a good Judson defense.

Quarterback Matt Owens set up a short Aaron Salinas touchdown run with gains of 37 and 21 yards.
