Showdown between area powers Southlake Carroll and Allen promises to be a classic

Not long ago, a meeting between the Carroll and Allen football teams was an annual occasion in the 5A playoffs. The programs met every year between 2003 and 2006, twice in the state semifinals.

Every time, the Dragons ended the season for a talented Eagles program. All but once, Carroll met its opponent as the defending 5A state champion. This year, Allen is the team that enters the contest wearing a crown.

Despite the second-round playoff setting, make no mistake, this  meeting between the Dragons (10-1) and the Eagles (10-1) is a clash of Texas high school football titans.

Just seeing a playoff match pitting the two teams set for 8 p.m. Saturday at Cowboys Stadium gets the attention of area fans, as well as football enthusiasts and coaches across the state. Carroll players know what a big game this is, too.
