Week 3 recruiting roundup - Texas A&M
This week our coverage gets defensive as we check in on the seven defensive commits from the Class of 2010.
Featured Player: Ivan Robinson - Longville (La) Defensive Tackle
Had 11 tackles, 2 for loss and forced a fumble in a 26-7 win over previously unbeaten Iota. The senior from South Beauregard high school had a big challenge in the form of Iota running back Trey St. Andre. He entered the game as the second-leading rusher in the state of Louisiana, averaging over 200 yards a contest, but was held in check by South Beauregard. Robinson and his teammates held him to only 55.
The coaching staff has worked him at tight end in practices but he has yet to see action in a game. "I know I can help us on the offensive side of the ball too but I haven't got a chance to show it in a game yet" he said. "It's all good, as long as we're winning that's all that matters" he added. Through three games, Robinson has 28 tackles, five tackles for losses, two sacks and a forced fumble.
Brandon Jackson - Evangel Defensive Tackle, Shreveport, La
Jackson and his Evangel teammates were dominant in a 30-6 win over Jefferson (MS) County. In addition to racking up seven tackles (two for loss) he saw action on the other side of the ball at offensive guard. How dominant was the defense? They held Jefferson County to just 1 yard rushing and 92 total yards. Jackson was immovable in the middle of the defense. Evangel is now 2-1 and will travel to Lafayette for their next game.
Nehemiah Hicks - Hutto Defensive End
A tough night for Hicks as the Hippos' lose their first game of the season to Austin Del Valle, 16-10 in overtime. Hicks finished with just four tackles but was fighting a stomach bug throughout the night. He also helped his team overcome a 4th-and-17 with a 27 yard pass reception. Their season continues Friday night against Pflugerville Hendrickson.
Damontre Moore - Rowlett Defensive End
Rowlett has struggled in non-district with a 1-3 record. Last Friday they lost to Wylie 34-17, however Moore held his own. He finished the night with six tackles and one sack. He has been the Eagles' top playmaker on the defensive side of the ball. For the season he now has 35 tackles (11 for loss), five sacks, a forced fumble and a blocked field goal. They have a bye this week and will try to get back on the winning track next week as they open district play against North Garland.
Corey Nelson - Skyline Linebacker
Had his best game yet as he led the Raiders in tackles with 12 (eight for loss) in a 45-19 victory over Plano East. Nelson was happy with his performance and told Rivals.com, "We looked a lot better on defense this game than last week," said Nelson. "Personally, I think I finally got the rust off and was ready to go" he added. Skyline opens district play this week on the road at Lake Highlands.
Dominique Patterson - Skyline Linebacker
Patterson was solid against the run and in pass covearge, making five tackles and two pass deflections. The Raiders defense is one of the best in the state thanks to the presence of Nelson and Patterson. They are holding opponents to an average of 16 points and 282 yards per game.
Gavin Stansbury - Franklin (La) Defensive End
While the team is off to a slow (1-2) start, Stansbury is playing well. In a 52-7 loss to Kaplan, he was one of the few bright spots, leading the team with seven tackles.
2011 Player Spotlight: Lufkin quarterback DeAuntre Smiley
One player the Aggies have their eye on is Lufkin quarterback DeAuntre Smiley. Last week he led the Panthers to a 28-14 win over Longview (the top-ranked team in Class 4A). He accounted for all four touchdowns, 2 on the ground and the other two came through the air. He finished with 198 total yards and most importantly, no turnovers.
Lufkin is now 3-1 on the season and will close out non-district play with a home game this Saturday at 2 PM vs. Mesquite.
