Thunderbirds blow past McAllen

SAN ANTONIO ? Much like the game between the two schools? female squads a week ago, Wagner had too much firepower for McAllen from the opening tip.

The Thunderbrds (35-3) jumped out to a 15-6 lead, using their full-court press to force McAllen into countless turnovers. Nick Garza slowed the bleeding with a four points, getting the Bulldogs (28-10) within 15-10, but then Wagner exploded.

The Thunderbirds hit six 3-pointers over the next nine minutes, sparking a 32-17 run that all but ended any hopes of a dramatic McAllen comeback. Wagner put it on cruise control the rest of way, posting a 93-64 victory Friday night in a Class 5A Region IV semifinal game at UTSA?s Convocation Center.

Six players finished in double figures for Wagner, led by Marlon Smith?s 16 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks and Aaron Thomas? 15 points and seven rebounds. The Thunderbirds shot 49 percent from the field and never let their lead slip under 19 points.

The win also marked the 11th time this season that Wagner has broken the 90-point mark.

J.J. Avila paced McAllen with a solid 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Wagner?s reward is now a rematch with District 26-5A rival Madison, a 78-73 winner over Edinburg in the other semifinal. The two have faced off three times this season with Wagner winning two of the meetings.

Henderson helps Duke crush Southern Illinois

Gerald Henderson scored 20 points for Duke, including four three-pointers.
Gerald Henderson led all scorers with 20 points while Jon Scheyer and Kyle Singler added 13 points apiece, as No. 10 Duke shook off a sloppy first half to roll Southern Illinois, 83-58, in semifinal action at the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer.

Brian Zoubek did provide some frontcourt help with 10 points and six rebounds for the Blue Devils (4-0), who will meet Michigan in Friday's final at Madison Square Garden. Ironically enough, the championship bout will be a preview of a regularly-scheduled meeting between the two teams on December 6.

'We're really pleased with the win,' said Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. '(Southern Illinois) plays outstanding defense and so do we, so points were really hard to come by.' ... Continue
