Yates falls to Wheatley in double OT

KATY -- Its never easy being the favorite. The Yates Lions found that out the hard way as they fell to the Wheatley Wildcats 75-73 in double overtime at the Merrell Center in Katy.

Down 64-55 with less than a minute to go, Wheatley guard Joseph Franklin scored with 49 seconds left, then senior guard DeShawn Garrett picked up a steal and a three-point play with 42.9 seconds to go to cut the deficit to 64-60.

After a pair of missed free throws by Yates' Anthony Jones, Franklin scored again with 34 seconds and Yates' Marshall Lange missed a pair of free throws with 21.6 seconds. Garrett got another steal and a layup with 12 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 64 and send it to overtime.

The teams entered the second overtime tied at 68. Yates guard Brandon Peters hit three of four free throws for a 71-68 lead. Wheatley responded with a three-point play by Kendrew Daniels to tie it. Franklin scored off a quick pass from Garrett with 28 seconds left to take the lead for good at 75-73.

Yates was ranked 4th in the nation going in to the game and finishes the season with a final record of 28-3. They were led in scoring by Baylor commit Anthony Jones who had 17 points. Wheatley was led by Joseph Franklin who also had 17.

Wheatley (30-5) advances to the state semi-finals where they'll take on Ft. Worth Southwest this Thursday.
