Royce White happy to be staying home

HOPKINS -- Like most young kids, Royce White grew up with a dream to play sports at the collegiate level. In April White turned down offers from schools such as USC and Michigan State and committed to play for the hometown team, Minnesota.

"My family and I felt like the things Minnesota had to offer were the best for me. I've always loved the Gopher program and Coach Smith. Even if he wasn't the coach they would still be at the top of my list. It's a dream come true fo me to stay in the area where my family can see me play" White said.

At 6 foot 7 and 210 pounds, White figures to contribute immediately at the small forward position. "I can't wait to get in there and start competing. I bring a lot of versatility to the table and am working hard to improve my game" he said.

As for turning down several high profile schools, White said he has no regrets. "Everything you look for in a college is right here in my own backyard. Getting to play in the Big 10, going to the tournament, it's all right here, plus I know I'll have the support of my family and friends" he added.

Gopher fans are hoping that White will help lead the team into the spotlight in a conference that has recently been dominated by Michigan State.

Bird, Magic inducted into Collegiate Hall of Fame

Magic Johnson and Larry Bird were inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball
Hall of Fame.
Forever linked by their classic matchup in the 1979 NCAA championship game and then moving to their intense rivalry in the NBA, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were back together again for a special moment Sunday night as the two were inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.

The game between Johnson's Michigan State Spartans and Bird's Indiana State team remains the highest rated televised college basketball game. The Spartans won the game 75-64 behind Johnson's 24 points.

'I think Indiana State and Michigan State put the madness in March,' said Johnson. 'He made me a better college player. He made me a better NBA player, and not just that, he made me a better man. I'm just happy that I had somebody that always was about raising the bar.'   continue>> ... Continue
