Dulles advances to state, 70-62 over Madison

CAMPBELL CENTER -- The much anticipated showdown between Sugarland Dulles and Madison did not disappoint as both teams gave it their all but in the end it was Dulles earning the right to go to Austin by winning the Class 5A Region III championship with a 70-62 decision over Madison in the regional title game.

The Vikings (33-4), earn their first berth in the Class 5A state tournament in school history.

Dulles started off hot in the first quarter behind the shooting of  Abel Galliguez (20 points) who hit four first-quarter treys. The Vikings hit 5-of-6 as a team in the first period to take a 21-13 lead.

After the intermission, Dulles picked up right where it had left off with A 3-pointer and two layups by Shawn Umeh starting a 12-0 run that gave Dulles its biggest lead of the day, 46-29. Umeh finished with a team high 23 points.

To Madison's credit, they didn't fold as they pulled to within 1, 50-49 at the end of the third.

Credit the Madison defense for turning up the pressure on as they changed the tempo of the game with Tommy Mason-Griffin doing most of the damage, scoring eight of his game high 24 points at the end of the 3rd.

As is the case in most tight ballgames, this one came down to the 4th Quarter and it was the combination of Dre and D'Angelo Harrison that put the Vikings over the top as they scored 9 key points down the stretch.

Head Coach Mike Carrabine was estatic after the game as he told the Houston Chronicle, "We're very unselfish, we're just not very big. They don't mind sharing the ball and they don't care who gets the glory as long as we keep moving on."

With today's win, they are now one of just 4 teams left standing and will play an opponent yet to be determined next Friday in the state semi-finals in Austin.

Fresno State heads to San Jose for WAC matchup

Teams in the Western Athletic Conference continue to jockey for possible postseason positioning, as the Fresno State Bulldogs pay a visit to the San Jose State Spartans for a special Friday night affair.

Entering this week the Bulldogs are a mere 3-3 in conference and are sixth in the standings, yet with this and a game against Boise State next Friday night there is a possibility the squad could end up with eight wins overall. At the moment, FSU is just trying to win back-to-back games for the third time in 2008 after defeating New Mexico State by a score of 24-17 last weekend.

Meanwhile, the Spartans have dropped from first place in the WAC into a tie for fourth with Hawaii at 4-3 following a 41-17 thumping by Nevada last weekend. The loss was the second in a row and the third in four games for an SJSU squad that is already bowl eligible at 6-5 but would like to make themselves a bit more appealing with another tally in the win column in this their regular-season finale. ...
