Girls State Tournament -- Championship

AUSTIN -- It's Championship Saturday at the Frank Erwin Center. Find out who is taking home the hardware!

Class 5A State Final

Cy-Fair 50, DeSoto 33: The Cy-Fair Lady Bobcats led this from start to finish as the Ogwumike sisters (Chiney and NeNeka) combined for 27 points and almost single handedly beat the Lady Eagles. Nneka also contributed 17 rebounds and took home MVP honors. DeSoto finishes the season with a record of 40-2, while Cy-Fair finishes 39-2.

Class 4A State Final

Lincoln 50, Dickinson 47: After racing to a 15-point lead early in the second quarter, the Dickinson Lady Gators were not able to off a spirited rally by Lincoln this afternoon.

Lincoln's Kimetria Hayden, who was named the Championship Game Most Valuable Player, led all scorers with 22 points, but the Dickinson duo of Marissa Ashton and Audrianna Garcia had 14 and 10 points, respectively, that led a balanced attack for the Lady Gators.

Hayden had the game-winning layup off a steal with just seconds remaining on the clock.

Ashton finished with a double-double by pulling down 13 rebounds.

Lincoln was able to overcome 15 turnovers which resulted in 11 points for Dickinson. The Lady Gators, on the other hand, had 14 turnovers that Lincoln converted into 11 points.

Dickinson held a 38-37 advantage in rebounds, and also had a 14-7 advantage in second chance points, but it wasn't enough.

Class 2A State Final

Jim Ned 65, Poth 49: The Jim Ned Lady Indians jumped out to a 19-4 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in picking up the second championship in school history.

Shelby Easterling had 21 points and seven rebounds in the win, while Rita Day added 15 points.

Kasey Harlos had 20 points in the loss for Poth, which finishes its season with a 27-8 record.

Class 3A State Final

Canyon 59, Kennedale 43: Canyon coach Joe Lombard picked up his 1,000th career win as the Lady Eagles rolled to the 14th state championship in school history this morning.

"You can't write a better script than that," Lombard said after the game. "I didn't care where  it happened, but now that its over, it's really kind of cool that it happened here. This is just the icing on the cake!"

Jade Tinner led Canyon with 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting. The feel good story of the game was when junior varsity player Casey Land was put on the floor, fouled while shooting and drained both free throws in her state tournament debut.

"To be on the team that got Coach (Lombard) his 1,000th win is incredible," Tinner said after the game.

Brittany Hampton had 15 points for Canyon, while Destini Hughes led Kennedale with 17 points in the loss.

The title was the fifth in six years for Canyon.

Cajuns, Blue Raiders Square Off

Joe Craddock has completed 63.4 percent of his passes for 2,435 yards.
The red-hot Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders will try to close out their regular season on a high note when they take on the UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns at Cajun Field. The Blue Raiders played extremely well of late and come into this matchup with a three-game winning streak. The last time MTU was on the court the team grabbed a thrilling, 52-13 victory over North Texas. With the win over North Texas, the Blue Raiders pushed their conference ledger to 3-3. Unfortunately the Blue Raiders have struggled on the road this season, losing five of their six matchups outside of Murfreesboro. As for the Cajuns, they head into this matchup in the midst of a three-game slide. The last time ULL was on the field the team suffered an embarrassing, 48-3 setback to Troy. The loss dropped the Cajuns' league ledger to 4-2 on the season. The Cajuns have won four of the last five matchup against Middle Tennessee and now own a slim 5-4 lead in the all-time series between the two schools on the gridiron.

The Blue Raiders have been mediocre at best offensively, racking up a pedestrian 343.1 total ypg, which has led to an average 22.4 ppg. The majority of the team's success has come from the pass, as MT is producing 241.6 ypg through the air, and out of the 29 touchdowns scored by this unit, 16 have come via the pass. Joe Craddock has done a commendable job under center for the Blue Raiders, completing 63.4 percent of his passes for 2,435 yards. The quarterback comes into this matchup with 13 touchdowns and only six interceptions. In the recent contest with North Texas, the Blue Raiders tallied 489 total yards, and it was good enough for MT to roll to a convincing victory. Craddock had a solid showing, throwing for 251 yards and one score on 19-of-31 passing. Phillip Tanner, who has been inconsistent throughout the season, was the main source of production, as the tailback rushed for 159 yards and five touchdowns. ... Continue
