Plainsmen coach resigns
Vic Self, the head boys basketball coach at Monterey High School for the last 20 years, announced his resignation Friday afternoon according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.
Self, a 48-year-old native of Portales, N.M., said he will remain at Monterey as a teacher and athletic game manager. Lubbock ISD athletic director Gary Gaines said the search for Self's replacement will begin immediately.
Self compiled a 416-237 overall record with the Plainsmen, leading the team to at least a share of eight district championships and 13 playoff appearances. He also guided Monterey to back-to-back appearances in the regional tournament during the 1990s.
