Trinity takes down Bingham, 42-21 in a showdown of state-powerhouses

ARLINGTON --
All summer long the Bingham Miners talked about coming to Texas and showing the nation that football in Utah can hold its own with any team in the country. A win over a perennial powerhouse program like Trinity at the Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Classic would have gone a long way towards establishing that.

8th-ranked Euless Trinity never gave the Miners that chance as they scored on their opening possession and never looked back. Junior tailback Tevin Williams sprinted 50 yards around the left end to give the Trojans a lead they would never relinquish. Bingham countered midway through the second quarter with a nine-play, 59-yard march capped by a 29-yard scoring catch by Brady Measom to tie the game at seven.

Trinity took control of the game immediately after with senior receiver Bobby Brown capping an impressive drive by sweeping in from 16 yards out. The Trojan offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage opening up big holes throughout the day. The Miner defense struggled to stay with the speed of the fleet-footed Brown and Williams on the perimeter.

Coming into the game, the primary goal of the Trojan defense was to slow down junior tailback Harvey Langi. Langi is one of the top prospects in Utah but never could get untracked as the front seven was able to control the line of scrimmage, holding him to a modest 52 yards on 13 carries.

With just three returning starters returning from last season's 12-1 state-quarterfinalist, Trinity entered the game with more question marks than answers but many of those were answered as the front seven looked stout and a revamped offensive line looked solid against a stout Bingham defense.

Senior quarterback Willie Hubbard had mixed results in his first start at the varsity level. He made a lot of impressive throws but was a little inconsistent, getting sacked for a huge loss on an ill-advised scramble in the first half and threw an interception in the second half on a screen pass. His touchdown pass to Bobby Brown at the end of the first half  was arguably the play of the game, giving the Trojans the momentum and some breathing room going into half-time  with a 21-7 lead.

He closed the scoring with a 9 yard scramble to give Trinity an impressive 42-21 win over last season's state finalist from Utah. Next up for Trinity is a showdown with Cedar Hilll Saturday night at Pennington Field.
