Week 9 Playoff Projections

One of the holiest commandments in coaching circles is to never look past your next opponent. With just two weeks left in the regular season, that's not a problem for teams that are trying to get into the playoffs. Likewise for those who have already clinched playoff spots as they are busy fine-tuning things and getting ready for the "second season".

Fans and media on the other hand, can't help but look ahead sometimes and if the playoffs were to start today, the second round offers some outstanding matchups.

In Division I Region 2, it appears that The Woodlands and Round Rock Stony Point will square off for the second year in a row in the area round. Both teams have spent most of the year in the top 10 and have been dominant throughout the season. Stony Point was upset last week by Cedar Park, 28-21. Sometimes a late season loss can be a good thing though as it takes the pressure off of going through a season undefeated and also has a way getting players refocused.

Division 1 Region II also will have a round 2 dandy between Skyline and DeSoto. Skyline features 18 D-1 recruits with half of those already committed to schools such as LSU, OU and Texas A&M. DeSoto has 10 of their own. You'd be hard-pressed to find a playoff game with this much talent on one field.

In Division 2, a second round matchup between Allen and Southlake Carroll is not yet guaranteed but very likely could happen. Allen is the D-1 defending state champion and Carroll is playing their best football since 2006. Both teams have been in the top 10 all season.
