Abilene Cooper defeats Heritage, 46-33 in Colleyville SQT

GRAPEVINE--
The old saying "the early bird gets the worm" certainly comes to mind as the Cooper Cougars left Abilene at 5 AM to compete in the Colleyville Heritage SQT. Senior quarterback Ryan Heslep made sure that the three hour drive to the metroplex wasn't wasted by leading the Cougars  through pool play undefeated to set up a showdown with state powerhouse Southlake Carroll.

The semi-final game with Carroll was hotly contested with both teams doing plenty of jawing back and forth as the game went on. Cooper managed to hang on for a 27-26 victory over Carroll to advance to the finals against the host team Colleyville Heritage.

Heritage had little trouble disposing of Irving MacArthur with Kyle Miller doing most of the damage catching three touchdown passes from quarterback Kyle Halbern.

In the championship game, Ryan Heslep did a great job of distributing the ball to Derek Footer and Tommy Bowman amongst others. Bowman caught a deep ball on the last play of the first half to give Cooper all the momentum.

On defense it was was T.C. Robinson giving Cooper a spark as he returned an interception for a touchdown that proved to be too much for Heritage to overcome.

Sideline notes

* Birdville quarterback Josh Dorman was impressive in leading the Hawks to a 42-14 win over Keller and just missed upsetting Southlake Carroll, losing 33-32. Senior receiver Clarke Renfro was Dorman's main target with the most impressive touchdown coming just before halftime, as Renfro got deep behind the Carroll secondary for a 35 yard touchdown reception.

* Both David Piland and Kyle Williamson played well at quarterback for Southlake Carroll, with Ryan Gentry and Cameron Stone turning a good day's performance. Stone had the play of the day going up and making a circus catch to put Carroll back in the game against Cooper in the semi-finals. The Dragons were unable to get a stop on defense with under two minutes to play. Tommy Avers also performed well, showing good hands out of the backfield.

* After going undefeated and winning their home tournament a week ago, Arlington Bowie finally lost a game but they didn't go down easy. Colleyville Heritage needed overtime to pull it off, winning a shootout, 49-48.
