National Signing Day: Whaley To Play For Texas

It has been tough to catch Chris Whaley. But the Texas Longhorns managed to do just that.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound running back from Madisonville has signed a letter of intent to play for the Longhorns. As soon as the I's were dotted and the T's were crossed, smiles swept through those who bleed burnt orange.

Whaley has drawn comparisons to another top notch runner, former Arkansas running back and current Oakland Raider star Darren McFadden. Whaley possesses a similiar running style and frame to McFadden and has the skill and ability to take over a game. Whaley also has the tools to develop into a complete back, just like McFadden, who can wear down defenses as the game goes along.

Whaley finished his career at Madisonville on a high note, rushing for 1,925 yards and 24 touchdowns. He had over 400 yards rushing twice last season. Against Taylor, Whaley ran for 418 yards and six touchdowns. A couple of weeks later against Rudder, he had 410 yards rushing and seven touchdowns. Most guys don't rack up those numbers for an entire season. Whaley did it in a single game? twice.

Performances like that bring plenty of attention. Oklahoma, LSU, Florida State and Notre Dame showed interest in Whaley. But in the end, Whaley felt his best fit was playing for Mack Brown down in Austin.

Many scouts feel Whaley is a can't-miss prospect with outstanding natural gifts. Whaley could be the next in line of great running backs to wear a Texas jersey.
